Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Juan Edgardo "Sonny" Angara virtually addressed teachers during the 2024 National Teachers' Month (NTM) Kick-off Program, extending his apologies for not being able to attend the event in person, September 5.

In his message, Secretary Angara expressed his gratitude to the local officials present, including Mayor Eric Singson, Congresswoman Kristine Meehan, and SPM Ericson Singson, as well as the DepEd officials and teachers who attended the event.

He also thanked the City Government for hosting the program.

Secretary Angara emphasized the crucial role of teachers in nation-building, stating, "No progress is possible without the teachers. Thank you for all your service and commitment; you are the foundation of our nation."

The Secretary shared several key updates for educators, including the release of the salary differential under the Salary Standardization Law, an increased and tax-free teaching allowance for this year, and the expansion of career progression opportunities that have created new positions for teachers and administrative roles.

He highlighted that these developments align with President Bongbong Marcos' directive to prioritize the welfare of teachers.

Secretary Angara also thanked the President for announcing a ₱7,000 medical allowance for teachers and proposing a health plan for them.

Additionally, he mentioned the reduction of the hardship index from 0.37 to 0.33, allowing more teachers to benefit from the special hardship allowance.

Angara assured teachers that the DepEd is actively working on the release of the 2023 and 2024 performance-based bonuses.

He also announced that the department is preparing to implement a flexible MATATAG schedule for teachers based on the conditions in their respective schools.

Lastly, the Secretary reiterated the President's commitment to improving school facilities, providing computers, and introducing modern technology for students. He assured that the DepEd is listening to feedback from the field and is committed to addressing concerns for the benefit of the children.
